Individuals who choose medical services will meet for group counselling once per week during the length of their treatment. The group will discuss healthy lifestyle nutrition choices and other lifestyle changes.

Service Description: Provides a comprehensive range of acute care in-patient and out-patient services to the residents of Thunder Bay and regional referral services to the residents of Northwestern Ontario

Operates a regional assessment and treatment centre for pre and post-operative care of patients with obesity requiring gastric bypass surgery
Two types of services offered include:
Medical Services
Provides non-medical services, including nutrition and lifestyle counselling, for individuals who cannot or choose not to have surgery
Surgical Services
Performs gastric bypass surgery, however, will refer complex cases to a partner program in Southern Ontario

Fees: None
Application:
  • Individuals must have their primary care provider request a referral to the clinic through the Ontario Bariatric Registry

  • A primary care provider can be a family doctor, a walk-in clinic doctor, or a nurse practitioner
Eligibility / Target Population: Medical Program

  • Individuals 18 years of age or older who are obese; referrals allowed at age 17.5 years of age or older

  • Individuals are required to have a body mass index of 30 or higher OR a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one approved co-morbidity determined by a primary care provider



Surgical Program

  • Individuals 18 years of age or older who are obese

  • Individuals are required to have a body mass index of 35 or higher OR a BMI between 30 and 34.9 with a least one approved co-morbidity determined by a primary care provider
