Service Description: Operates a 75-bed acute care facility and provides an array of services

Lake of the Woods District Hospital and Ogimaawabiitong Kenora Chiefs Advisory are working together to improve experiences for Indigenous patients and their families and have created an Indigenous Patient Relations Department that includes:
Cultural Services Manager
  • Promotes Anishinaabe culture and practices in the Lake of the Woods District Hospital
  • Supports cultural awareness, cultural safety and regional orientation and education to all staff
  • Promotes both traditional and mainstream approaches to healing and helping clients
  • Smudging is available in the Ojibwe Healing Room located on the 3rd floor of the hospital
Client Navigators
  • Provides translation/interpretation, advocacy and support in a culturally-sensitive manner for First Nation patients during their hospital stay
  • Assistance with accessing traditional healing, navigating the healthcare system, discharge planning and follow-up
Emergency Department Mental Health Therapist
  • Provides translation/interpretation, advocacy and support in a culturally-sensitive manner
  • Link patients and families to community resources
