Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
  • Provides a monthly taxable benefit to retired contributors

  • Provides a monthly benefit available to most Canadians 65 years of age who meet the Canadian legal status and residence requirements
  • Provides OAS information online

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)
  • Provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income OAS recipients living in Canada

Application: Canada Pension Plan (CPP)

  • Begin application six months before wishing to receive benefits

  • Apply online, or print and complete an application from the website and mail it, or drop off completed forms at a Service Canada office

  • Must have Social Insurance Number to apply


Old Age Security (OAS)

  • Begin application six months before turning 65

  • Apply online, or print and complete an application from the website and mail it, or drop off completed forms at a Service Canada office

  • If not born in Canada or have not been living continuously in Canada since age 18, must submit citizenship or immigration papers as well as a statement of all the dates arrived in and departed Canada from age 18 to present


Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)

  • Apply online, or print and complete an application from the website and mail it, or drop off completed forms at a Service Canada office
Eligibility / Target Population: Individuals 60 years of age and up

Canada Pension Plan (CPP)

  • Must have worked; and

  • Must have made at least one valid contribution to the CPP: and are

  • either 65 or older or

  • between 60 and 65 and want the retirement pension payments to begin within 11 months


Old Age Security (OAS)

People living in Canada

  • Must be 65 years of age or older

  • Must live in Canada and be a Canadian citizen or a legal resident at the time the pension application is approved

  • Must have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after turning 18


People living outside Canada

  • Must be 65 years of age or older

  • Must have been a Canadian citizen or a legal resident of Canada the day before leaving Canada

  • Must have lived in Canada for at least 20 years after turning 18

  • Low-income OAS recipients living in Canada
