Power of Attorney and Public Guardianship - North West

In Ontario, a Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows a person to appoint someone to make decisions about their property, finances, or personal health care if they become mentally incapable. If a mentally incapable person has no one suitable or willing to act on their behalf, the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee may step in to make these critical decisions.

These services are governed by the Public Guardian and Trustee Act and other laws, including the Substitute Decision Act, 1992. These services are accountable to the Ontario Legislature through the Ministry of the Attorney General. Concerns or serious complaints can be addressed by Ombudsman Ontario.
