Service Description: A rural health care organization that includes the Atikokan General Hospital, Atikokan Family Health Team and Atikokan Community Counselling to provide a range of health care and community services to residents in the Town of Atikokan and surrounding areas in the Rainy River District
NOTE: Do not call the Atikokan General Hospital Emergency Department seeking medical advice. Due to legal reasons the emergency department staff are unable to provide advice or information over the telephone

The Atikokan Family Health Team includes: Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Dietitian, Mental Health Worker, Pharmacist and Administration. Family Health Teams allow physicians and other allied health providers to work as a team to focus on keeping patients healthy
Medical care team focused on family and community health
  • Offers timely access to high quality primary care
  • Provides access to other health care professionals within and outside of the Family Health Team
  • Coordinates documentation if patient receives care from a member of the team
  • Administers various health programs
  • Participates in teaching with a regular rotation of medical students and residents from Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM)
Provides health care services including but not limited to:
  • Chronic disease management
  • Diabetes program
  • Health promotion
  • Disease prevention
  • Nutritional counselling
  • Mental health counselling
  • Exercise groups
  • Ear flushes
  • Immunizations and injections
  • Medication review
  • Women's health
  • Wound care

Fees: Service - Some tests and/or forms are not covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP); Most services covered by OHIP

  • No referral required for most services

  • Referrals from Physician/Nurse Practitioner required for Psychiatry services

  • Pharmaceutical counselling/medication checks available in a private setting; appointment required
