  • Open year round. Closed between December 25 - January 1st for the holiday season. Acceptance of applications may be limited during university down times such as Reading week and exam periods.

Service Description: Law students (caseworkers) supervised by licensed lawyers, providing free legal advice and representation to low income members of the public who cannot afford to pay for legal services

Law students, under the direct supervision of licensed lawyers, provide free legal advice and representation to low income earners who cannot afford to pay for legal services
Provides services in the following areas:
  • Minor criminal offences such as common assault, theft under $5000, and mischief to property under $5000
  • Provincial and traffic offences such as trespass to property, careless driving, speeding tickets, driving with no insurance, and driving under suspended licence
  • Small Claims Court and Civil disputes under $35,000
  • Tenant rights and applications to the Landlord and Tenant Board
  • Employment law

Fees: None ; Does not charge for legal services; clients may be responsible for disbursements such as court filing fees

  • Intake interviews are done by appointment only
Eligibility / Target Population:
  • Residents of Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Marathon, Schreiber, Municipality of Greenstone and Fort William First Nation

  • Income level as per the Legal Aid Ontario criteria and the nature of the legal issue will be assessed


Individuals are eligible if they receive one of the following:

  • Ontario Works

  • Ontario Disability Support Program

  • Old Age Security with Guaranteed Income Supplement

  • Canada Pension Plan when it is the only primary source of income

  • Veteran's benefits

  • Workplace Safety Insurance Board benefits which are temporary or threatened
