Service Description: Responsible for the delivery of provincially mandated services on behalf of the citizens of the District of Thunder Bay

Provides financial assistance to individuals or families who are homeless or facing homelessness to obtain or maintain housing
To establish a new residence:
  • financial assistance for rental costs
  • financial assistance for utility connection charge/deposit
  • financial assistance for moving expenses
To avoid eviction or disconnection of utilities:
  • financial assistance for rental arrears
  • financial assistance for utility and fuel arrears (gas, hydro, water, hot water tank rental, propane, oil or wood)
  • financial assistance for tax arrears
Note: This program does not provide financial assistance to individuals living on a First Nations Reserve. Individuals can contact their Band Office to inquire about rent or utility arrears.

Application:
  • Pick up application at 231 May St S, or

  • Call office to have application mailed out

Eligibility / Target Population:
  • Individuals receiving Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program benefits; or

  • Individuals who are considered low-income (as defined by income/asset levels, AND

  • Individuals who have received an eviction notice due to rental arrears, or

  • Individuals who have had a utility or the heating to the current residence cut off, or

  • Individuals who have received a disconnection notice for a utility or the heating to the current residence, AND

  • have satisfied the Administrator of the program that they will not be evicted and/or will retain the use of their utilities if payment is made


Note: Cannot access the program if any member of the household has received financial assistance under the Housing Security Fund within the past 24 months
