Service Description:
  • Addresses public health issues and promotes healthy living
  • Administers health promotion and disease prevention programs within the Kenora and Rainy River Districts


  • Provides routine food premise inspections, including street food vending carts
  • Investigates all complaints against food premises and food related issues
  • Investigates food-borne illnesses and outbreaks
  • Carries out food recalls
  • Offers food handler training courses
  • Offers advice to new and renovated food premise operators and provides initial inspection
  • Issues Special Occasions Food Permits
  • Provides Food Safety educational resources including proper handwashing techniques
  • Works on various initiatives including:
    • Area municipalities and community groups
    • Canadian Food Inspection Agency
    • Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
    • Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
    • Thunder Bay Public Health Laboratory

    Special Occasions Food Permits

    • Required by all vendors selling food at locations not routinely inspected and approved by Health Unit
