Service Description: Responsible for the delivery of provincially mandated services on behalf of the citizens of the District of Thunder Bay

  • Provides short term financial assistance to individuals and families in need
  • Offers Extended Health Benefits to qualifying individuals
  • Provides support and assistance to program participants in meeting their participation responsibilities
  • Partners with other community services to connect clients with education, training and volunteer opportunities
  • Participants can access a variety of programs and support services for basic needs, shelter and emergency assistance, including but not limited to:
    • Child Care
    • Clothing Needs
    • Discretionary Benefits
    • Drug Benefits
    • Funeral and burial expenses
    • Pay-Direct to Landlord
    • Special Diets Allowance

    Fees: None
    Application: Individuals can apply online or by contacting the office
    Eligibility / Target Population: Individuals must:

    • be 16 years of age and older

    • a resident of Ontario

    • be in immediate financial need to help pay for food and housing costs

    • be willing to take part in activities that will help find employment

    • sign a Participation Agreement


    Amount of financial assistance provided is determined by various factors including:

    • Assets

    • Family size

    • Housing costs

    • Income


    Extended Health Benefits

    Individuals and families who:

    • were eligible for Ontario Works in the previous months, or

    • are no longer eligible for Ontario Works because they received a payment for loss of income under the 1986-1990 Hepatitis C Settlement Agreement
