After using the doorbell, it will shine a blue light, and an ILRC Thunder Bay staff member will greet you and welcome you into the building.

Service Description: Delivers programs and services for and by people with disabilities in the Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario region designed to increase self-directed skill development, employment and recreation opportunities; promotes the Independent Living Philosophy of choice, flexibility, and control

  • Direct Funding is an Ontario wide self managed attendant care services program that enables participants, or Self Managers, to receive monthly funds to hire and manage their own attendants on a schedule that fits their needs - whether their needs are at home, at work, or in the community
  • Funded through the Ministry of Health and administered by the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto and Independent Living Centres across Ontario, funding is based on individual service needs and are portable within Ontario
  • Offers unique alternative to traditional publicly funded attendant care services, such as agency-based services

  • Empowers participants to:
    • choose their own attendants and manage their care team
    • determine who, what, where and when they receive services
    • directly manage their funding, ensuing a fully customized approach to care

    Eligibility / Target Population: Individuals can apply if they:

    • are aged 16 years of age or older

    • are a resident of Ontario

    • require attendant services due to a permanent physical disability

    • are able to complete the written application on their own initiative and in their own words

    • have attendant care service requirements that have been stable over a period of at least one year

    • are able to meet with a panel to discuss their needs and determine their eligibility

    • are able to hire, train, supervise and schedule attendants

    • are able to meet all the legal requirements associated with being an employer

    • are capable of managing and accounting for their funding
